March 21, 2012 in FYI, Incredible Findings, Science

I ran into the science of reading elemental hand shapes over 10 years ago in a book on asian herbology. it seemed like it could be a great companion to astrology that could offer further insight into personality types and dispositions. i stumbled across this site today and revitalized my interest in this science. let me know what you think. what type of element are you?

Water Hand: The first kind of hand is water composed with soft dedication, it has long palm long slim fingers, enmeshed with fine lines, these kinds of hands are soft and smooth, which is associated with insecure feelings, and shows over emotional of an individual in every aspect of life. Their personal as well as professional life also suffers but they have a strong intellect. Water hand people are also known to be highly imaginative. They always keep dreaming or imagining about those things which requires imagination and creativity. Sometime it happens that they dream a lot and work less. Water hand people are extremely sensitive to external conditions. Water hand people are really very sympathetic to others in society. And they care for poor people or contribute in development.

Fire Hand:There are few hands composed with a square long palm, short fingers and smooth skin. These are known as fire hands. Fire hands are associated with an energetic attitude. These people are full of energy and fire to do anything new. Sometime they become very impetuous. These people seem to be have more intuition than intellect. As a result they create so many obstacles in their life and family just because of intuitive nature. These people are more creative in a practical way rather than having a imagination. Fire hand people are always excited and they try to make environment excitable. They can easily run into an excessive emotion as well. Sometimes fire hand people are also called ‘intuitive’ or ‘impulsive’ hand.

Earth Hand: These types of hands are composed with heavy skins and bones, having a square palm size with thick and short fingers, with dark and very few palm lines. The palm lines are very deeply marked. These people are associated with a well balanced and reliable nature. These people have a more intellectual than intuitive attitude; these people are very tenacious, honest, and very practical and dependable in nature. They are also known as inert and slow starting. They are not much imaginative by nature like others, they believe in work. And always try to get the work done with accuracy. Sometimes these people become very violent too. As an individual these people play really important roles for the whole community.

Air Hand:These hands are composed of long bones and flexible fingers. Joints of all the bones are of equal proportion and such hands can be easily recognized with help of their fingers. The fingers are thin, long, artistic and well formed. Sometimes engraved with deeply etched lines, these people are very well balanced and reliable type. These people are very intellectual and also have a intuitive nature. Generally, profoundly distrustful of emotional values, sometimes they become quick-witted. Air type hand people are also known as good communicators. They can be a leader or a politician. A person with this hand type will be mostly truthful but can be devious.

Mixed Hand: Mixed hand person will be of mixture type of characteristics and behavior like their hand. The mind of such a person will be uncertain and they can soon become hopeless if they don’t succeed in doing a particular work. For this reason, they can become self-centered. They will be changeable and versatile to such an extent that they lack definite purpose in their life and easily get defamed. Many times mixed hand type people often lack mental disposition for reflection and deep thought.
Mixed hand person can have a great result out of their life if they utilize their ability in a potential way.

prana:the breath of life

February 20, 2012 in Culture, Food Clothing &Hip Hop, Health, Life Experience, Sa-Roc, Science

Prana is the Sanskrit word for “vital life”. Similar to the Chinese notion of qi, prana is the notion of a vital, life-sustaining force of living beings and vital energy. Prana is a central concept in Ayurveda and Yoga, where it is believed to flow through a network of fine subtle channels called nadis. Its most subtle material form is the breath, but it is also to be found in the blood, and its most concentrated form is semen in men and vaginal fluid in women.

Prana was first expounded in the Upanishads, where it is part of the worldly, physical realm, sustaining the body and the mother of thought and thus also of the mind. Prana suffuses all living forms. In the Ayurveda, the Sun and sunshine are held to be a source of prana.

There are five pranas or vital currents in the Hindu system:
Prāṇa : Responsible for the beating of the heart and breathing. Prana enters the body through the breath and is sent to every cell through the circulatory system.
Apāna : Responsible for the elimination of waste products from the body through the lungs and excretory systems.
Uḍāna : Responsible for producing sounds through the vocal apparatus, as in speaking, singing, laughing, and crying. Also it represents the conscious energy required to produce the vocal sounds corresponding to the intent of the being. Hence Samyama on udana gives the higher centers total control over the body.
Samāna : Responsible for the digestion of food and cell metabolism (i.e. the repair and manufacture of new cells and growth). Samana also includes the heat regulating processes of the body. Auras are projections of this current. By meditational practices one can see auras of light around every being. Yogis who do special practise on samana can produce a blazing aura at will.[citation needed]
Vyāna : Responsible for the expansion and contraction processes of the body, e.g. the voluntary muscular system.

Pranayama is the practice in which the control of prana is achieved (initially) from the control of one’s breathing. According to Yogic philosophy the breath, or air, is merely a gateway to the world of prana and its manifestation in the body.

Can Plastic Chemicals Cause Effeminate Behavior in Boys?

Can Plastic Chemicals Cause Effeminate Behavior in Boys?
By TIFFANY O’CALLAGHAN | November 16, 2009

Prenatal exposure to common chemicals used to soften plastics may impact boys’ play behavior later in life, according to new research published in the International Journal of Andrology.

This new study expands on a wealth of previous research in animals showing that exposure in the womb to chemicals known as phthalates was associated with lower testosterone production, and subsequently impaired genital development. (This phenomena, known as the phthalate syndrome, has also been shown to influence sexual development in animals later in life.)

And in addition to animal studies, the lead author of the current research, Shanna H. Swan, director of the Center for Reproductive Epidemiology at the University of Rochester, has also published previous findings demonstrating similar developmental issues in male human infants. This current study suggests that, not only does prenatal exposure to these common chemicals impact testosterone production, but it may also have longer term influence on gender identity and play behaviors as children grow up.

“Play behaviors offer themselves as a test of the hypothesis that phthalate exposures during gestation may alter brain sexual differentiation and its behavioural outcomes,” Swan and colleagues write.

To test this hypothesis, researchers initially began with 334 pregnant women, 150 of whom ultimately participated in all phases of the research. Midway through pregnancy, phthalate levels among the pregnant women were measured using urinalysis. Four to seven years later, when the participants’ children were between the ages of 3.6 to 6.4-years-old, researchers sent out questionnaires to assess the children’s play preferences, and also, how their parents’ attitudes might impact how they chose to play.

To assess behavior, researchers used a slightly modified version of the Pre-School Activities Inventory, a widely used screening tool that measures gender-related play in small children. (Much previous research has shown that there are objectively different play preferences among boys and girls: boys tend to do more play-fighting, for example, girls tend to be more captivated by dolls than toy trucks, etc.)

To determine how parental views might sway behavior, parents completed a survey that included questions such as, “What would you do if you had a boy who preferred toys that girls usually play with?” They were asked to respond with whether they would support or discourage such behavior, and how strongly. The combination of these two assessments was used to measure children’s gender-related play preferences.

What the researchers found was that, while, in girls exposure to phthalates had little significant impact on behavior, in boys, higher levels of exposure were correlated with “less masculine” preferences. What’s more, exposure to specific varieties of phthalates correlated most strongly with behavioral differences — namely, di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, or DEHP, and dibutyl phthalate, or DBP. As the authors write, “[t]he two metabolites of DBP, as well as their sum, were associated with a decreased (less masculine) composite score in boys.” Concentrations of DEHP too, the researchers found, “were associated with a decreased masculine score.”

These findings, the researchers say, suggest that phthalates indeed do “possess the potential to modify male behavior, potentially reflecting changes to the developing brain.” And this latest research may add to growing concerns about how common chemicals used in ubiquitous plastics, such as bisphenol A, or BPA, may be impacting our health — for the worse. (A study recently published in the journal Human Reproduction found high exposure levels to BPA among Chinese factory workers were associated with sexual dysfunciton.)

Of course, to substantiate these findings about phthalates, researchers acknowledge that more investigation beyond this relatively small sample population is necessary. But if these results are verified through additional, rigorous research, it may pose some unique and potentially challenging questions, not only about healthy levels of exposure to common plastic chemicals, but about just what factors shape gender identity in childhood, and as we grow older. Or, as the authors put it, “[i]f replicated in a larger sample, it would be a finding with implications that extend far beyond the scope of children’s play preferences…”

jamel shabazz- “hip hop’s gordon parks”

February 18, 2012 in Afrika, Culture, FYI, God Hop Movement, Hip Hop, History, Incredible Findings, Moors, Music, On the Scene, Photo Blogging, Sa-Roc, Science, Supernova

Often called “hip hop’s Gordon Parks”, renowned photographer Jamel Shabazz has certainly earned the title in his own right. Two of his books, “A Time Before Crack” and “Back in the Days”, helped to establish him as an important documentarian of Hip Hop, as they captured the essence and culture in a way that hadn’t been done before. He wasn’t featuring famous rappers or djs, but regular folks rocking Cazals, shell toes, and asymmetricals in the 80s and 90s. It wasn’t dressed up or airbrushed. They were real and honest photographs of everyday Black life during the glorious era of Hip Hop.

I first discovered his work in the mid 90s, when they began popping up in Urban Outfitters. I would gaze at the photographs, wishing I had been born 10 years earlier so that i could experience the energy, newness, and authenticity of the culture. Shabazz’s perspective was warm and familiar. You could sense the care he had for us, as he most often captured positive images of his subjects smiling and having fun.

Being a teenager without a job, I never got the chance to cop one of his books. Now that I am learning and growing as an emcee, I feel that his photos are integral to overstanding the heart of the culture. With the music as my soundtrack, his photos would be the visual representation of the golden era. So this time around, I WILL be getting my copies to share with my unborn children, to support this cultural preservation. And i think you should too. http://www.amazon.com/Time-Before-Crack-Jamel-Shabazz/dp/1576872130/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_b
